"Visiting International Researchers" – Chen Yun and her research on Walter Friedlaender

Guest researchers from all over the world come to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden in order to study on the spot at our museums and departments. Here they share an insight into their research.

Who are you and what is your field of research?

I am Chen Yun, assistant professor at ZSTU, Hangzhou City and doctoral candidate at Nanjing University. My research field is European art history of 16th century to 18th century, and my research project focuses on Walter Friedlaender and his works: “Mannerism and Anti-Mannerism in Italian Painting (1957)”, “Caravaggio Studies (1955)”, “Drawings of Nicolas Poussin (1939–55)”, “David to Delacroix (1952)”.

What led you to visiting the Dresden State Art Collections?

Personal contact in 2017 when I visited SKD’s Old Masters Gallery with students of ZSTU and HS-Anhalt Student Exchange Program. I was amazed about the quality of the artworks and the possibilities relating to my research.

Which object in our collections do you like best and why?
Renaissance and baroque paintings in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden

Which museum in Dresden impressed you most and why?
Exhibition about “Rembrandts Strich”/”Rembrandt’s Mark”

Which relevance does your research project have for society?
The reception of classical art as a mirror of society and its art critic gives us a better understanding of our own contemporary situation in our society, especially of mannerism as an all-time principle.

What will the museum of the future look like (What does this imply for your current research activities)?
The museum will always be a home for art, showing art, but maybe change from public entertainment purposes more and more to a university like institution of research. Collecting experience and wisdom and its international exchange could be the focus, helping us to better understand different cultures and learn.
